Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said on Tuesday, the micro-credit schemes can play a vital role in rehabilitation of the people of calamity hit areas where people have to start a new life. The Prime Minister was given a presentation by President of Khushhali Bank, Ghalib Nishtar here at the PM House.

The President Khushhali Bank apprised the Prime Minster that Khushhali Bank is launching a rehabilitation programme worth Rs 3 billion for the people of quake-hit areas to start new businesses and for expansion of existing businesses.

The loans, he said, would be given on soft terms to the people of AJK and NWFP.

He informed the meeting that 500,000 people of the affected areas would benefit from this scheme.

The President of Khushhali Bank also informed the meeting that the scheme includes opening of new branches in the affected areas of AJK and NWFP. This scheme also envisages imparting training for enhancing skills of the people of the affected areas to enable them to earn reasonable earnings.

The meeting was informed that this scheme is a part of overall rehabilitation and reconstruction phase announced by the government and would be implemented in consultation with the federal government.

The Prime Minister appreciated the initiative taken by the Khushhali Bank for helping the people of earthquake affected areas to restart a new life and said that this will help generate economic activity and create new job opportunities in the area. This would go a great length in mitigating the suffering of the people and give a boost to them in living a normal life, the Prime Minister added.

Omer Ayub Khan, Minister of State for Finance was also present in the meeting.
